MOFA Taiwan Fellowship

MOFA Taiwan Fellowship is established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to award foreign experts and scholars interested in researches related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, Asia-Pacific region and Sinology to conduct advanced research at universities or academic institutions in Taiwan. Up to year 2024, there have been more than 1,400 scholars from 93 countries accepted by this program. MOFA Taiwan Fellowship, echoing the APEC Scholarship Initiative, provides 12 Chinese Taipei APEC Fellowship openings per year exclusively for scholars and experts from developing APEC economies. MOFA Taiwan Fellowship is open for application in May and June every year and recipients will conduct their research in Taiwan as early as January the next year

1. Financial assistance

(1) Monthly grants are paid at the beginning of every month

a. Professors, associate professors, research fellows, or associate research fellows: NT$60,000

b. Assistant professors, assistant research fellows, or doctoral candidates: NT$50,000.

(2) One round-trip, economy-class ticket for the most direct route to Taiwan (The subsidy will be decided by MOFA in accordance with the relevant regulations).
(3) The terms of fellowship are 3 to 12 months.
(4) Accident insurance (plus a medical insurance for accidental injuries) coverage of NT$1 million

2. Eligibility
Recipients shall be foreign professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students at related departments of overseas universities, or are research fellows at an equivalent level in academic institutions abroad.

(ACC’s next grant cycle will open in the fall of 2024 and will be open to residents of qualifed Asian countries only.)

Areas of Interest:

The Asian Cultural Council (ACC) aims to advance international dialogue, mutual understanding, and respect by supporting cultural exchange projects between Asia and the U.S. and between Asian countries. ACC's fellowship and grant programs support individual artists, scholars, and arts professionals as well as organizations in the arts and cultural fields.

Available programs include:

  • the Individual Fellowship, for support conducting a specific research project, either between Asia and the U.S. or between Asian countries;
     
  •  the New York Fellowship, for artists, scholars, and cultural workers based in Asia to have a six-month fellowship program in New York City;
     
  • the Graduate Fellowship, for students based in Asia to pursue a graduate degree in the arts field in the U.S.; and,
     
  • the Organization Grant, for support conducting a cultural exchange project, either between Asia and the U.S. or between Asian countries, in which participants will benefit through cultural immersion, research, specialized training, exchange of knowledge among peers, and other process-oriented activities.

Eligible disciplines include:

  • archaeology;
  • architecture;
  • art history;
  • arts administration;
  • arts criticism;
  • conservation;
  • crafts;
  • curation;
  • dance;
  • ethnomusicology;
  • film, video, and photography;
  • literature;
  • museum studies;
  • music;
  • theater; and,
  • visual art.

Because ACC’s mission is focused on cultural exchange, grants are primarily made to support travel that results in cultural immersion; meaningful engagement; significant contributions to greater cross-cultural understanding; and peer-to-peer dialogue, relationship-building, or the exchange of knowledge. ACC does not support touring, performance, exhibition, or other types of travel focused on the production of work or audience-driven outcomes. 

Funding is not available for:

  • promotional activities and services;
  • commercial and industrial design;
  • commercial activity or commercial artists;
  • projects exclusively focused on attending workshops, arts and culture festivals, conferences, or participation in residency programs;
  • production-based costs;
  • capital and equipment purchases;
  • costs to organize or support events, including but not limited to, performances, exhibitions, fundraising, and receptions;
  • K-12 arts in education;
  • tuition expenses; or,
  • funding to support regranting programs.

CAAM accomplishes this mission by funding, producing, distributing, and exhibiting works in film, television, and digital media.

Midwest Taiwan Studies Graduate Student Workshop (Indiana University)

The Indiana University East Asian Studies Center’s Taiwan Studies Initiative invites graduate
students from the Midwest and beyond to submit proposals for the upcoming one-day in-person
workshop “Exploring Taiwan: From Historical Roots to Contemporary Issues.” It aims to
foster in-depth discussions, facilitate knowledge exchange, and highlight new research
concerning Taiwan. We welcome contributions that span historical analysis and address
contemporary issues facing Taiwan. The workshop organizers will provide modest travel grants
(up to $300 per presenter) and assist with lodging arrangements.


Themes and Topics
We encourage submissions that cover, but are not limited to, the following themes:
Historical Perspectives: Exploring Taiwan's complex past, from its indigenous history to
its colonial and post-colonial struggles, experiences under authoritarian regimes, and the
global Cold War.
Political Dynamics: Analysis of Taiwan's recent domestic politics, cross-strait relations,
and international relationships.
Economic Developments: Studies on Taiwan's economic growth, industry innovation,
and global trade relations.
Societal Changes: Insights into Taiwan's social movements, cultural transformations,
and demographic shifts.
Environmental Challenges: Research on Taiwan's environmental policies, conservation
efforts, and sustainability challenges.


Submission Guidelines
Prospective participants are requested to submit an abstract outlining their proposed presentation.
Submissions should adhere to the following format:
Title of the paper
Abstract: (250-300 words) summarizing the proposed presentation, including its
relevance to the workshop themes, methodology, and anticipated conclusions.

Evaluation Criteria
Proposals will be evaluated based on their originality, relevance to the workshop themes,
methodological rigor, and potential to contribute to broader understanding and dialogue on
Taiwan.

The North America Taiwanese Professors Association (NATPA) Young Scholars Program is currently accepting applications for travel support to attend the 2024 NATPA Annual Conference. Travel support includes:
1. Conference registration
2. Airfare (per person) or public transportation reimbursement with receipts up to $500 (US dollars).
3. Room for oversea participants up to 3 nights (8/02, 8/03, 8/04) shared by two
4. Meals during the conference

To be eligible, applicants must be Taiwanese or Taiwanese American graduate students, recent graduates, or postdoctoral scholars. Award recipients are required to give a presentation in the Young Scholars session scheduled for the conference.  Subject to the total support request, NATPA plans to award 12 applications this year.  Selection will be based on the applicants’ qualifications, evidence of active community involvement, and the proposed topic for presentation.  Priority will be given to presentations on applied research in science, technology, culture, education, social study, economics, or political science related to current issues in Taiwan or sustainable development of Taiwan.

Competition for Taiwan Scholars
(Woodrow Wilson International Center)

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is accepting applications from Taiwanese researchers for its Wilson Center Taiwan Scholar Program. The residential fellowship program will allow the scholar to spend one to two months during the summer at the Wilson Center in Washington DC, where they will pursue policy-oriented research designed to bridge the gap between the academic and policy communities. Following their residency in Washington, the Taiwan Scholar is expected to produce a policy brief and give a public presentation based on the findings at the Center.

Taiwan plays a key role in promoting democracy and ensuring free markets in East Asia and beyond. It remains a critical political, economic, and security partner for the United States in the region, and deepening U.S. understanding of Taiwan is essential at a time of significant change on both sides of the Pacific. The fellowship is open to Taiwanese scholars committed to research on contemporary Taiwanese issues that address questions related to political stability, economic growth, and regional security.
