Grand Narrative - TAH Documentary

CTS Documentary Workshop

Introduction

The Center for Taiwan Studies (CTS) at UC San Diego will host a series of summer workshops on Documenting Taiwanese/Taiwanese American Grandparents' Lives and Works.  The Workshops are part of Taiwanese American History and TAH Who's Who Project in conjunction with several established organizations, among them, San Dieog's Asian Film Festival.  Participants will be able to work with world-renowned filmmakers, and their documentaries will be shown at a variety of film festivals worldwide, with three of them receiving the CTS jurors' awards each year.

Summary

The CTS documentary workshop aims to provide essential filmmaking skills and opportunities for new filmmakers to work with those experienced in the field. The workshop is completely FREE, courtesy of the UC San Diego Center for Taiwan Studies and its generous donors. This workshop will provide camera packages, editing training, and a competition judged by industrial professionals. At the end of the workshop, you will bring home a film and a chance to win cash prizes.

Workshop Timeline

The workshop contains two parts. The first half contains lessons that help to grasp the fundamentals of documentary filmmaking and the essential tools for filmmaking like cinematography and camera. Camera gear will be provided.

Dates: July 24th, 25th and 26th.

After the filming finishes, participants will return back to the workshop for the latter half, which aims to teach the essential editing skills and the usage of sound tools for a successful post-production. We will provide a hand-to-hand tutorial for you to edit your film.

Dates: August 14th, 15th, and 16th.

Participants will continue to work on their films until the final submission date. We will provide consultation to their editing and their films, answering any questions or feedback when requested.

The final film submission deadline is October 30th

Final Award Prize Ceremony: December 15th
